Electric Vehicle Charging

As electric vehicles grow in popularity, we are frequently asked about what the charging requirements are for owning an EV (Electric Vehicle).

Since the majority of electric vehicle charging occurs at home, Danley’s can set up your new garage for electric vehicle (EV) charging. Your new garage can be outfitted with a 240-Volt outlet to ensure that your vehicle is fully charged and ready to go when you need it!

The world of electricity and EV charging can be very confusing. The most important question to ask is:

What level of Charging do I need in my garage?

Three levels of charging exist, each with their own pros & cons.

Level 1 Charging: Think of this as “house current.”

This is the slowest type of charging and utilizes a standard household outlet (120 volts). It will typically take over 24 hours to charge most electric vehicles and is why most consumers upgrade to Level 2 charging.

Level 2 Charging: Think of this as an “overnight” charge.

This provides an excellent value and utilizes an outlet similar to what your clothes dryer or larger appliances are probably plugged into. The outlets provide up to 240 volts of current. This type of outlet will take approximately 8-10 hours to fully charge an electric vehicle from empty.

During an In-Home Consultation, your Danley’s Representative can outfit your garage package with the appropriate electrical power for Level 2 Charging.*

Level 3 Charging: This is most-commonly found in public and commercial spaces, such as supercharging locations, stores, and certain parking lots.

Often referred to as DC Fast Chargers, or DCFCs, these chargers take just over an hour to fully charge a standard EV battery. These chargers are very expensive and not all EVs may be set up for them.

Electrical Vehicle Charging is becoming more common and will soon be a part of daily life for many of us.

For over 60 years, Danley’s has been building garages in the city of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. Over the course of those 60 years, we’ve become Chicagoland’s most trusted garage builder for many reasons. One key to our success is the fact that we’re always looking to the future. Whether it’s the materials utilized, the technology implemented, or utilizing new building methods, we strive to stay ahead of the curve, continually innovate, and provide the best options for our customers.

* Note: The panel in your home must have enough power and available circuits to support the higher voltage requirements of the outlet that will be installed in your garage. Your electrician will determine how much your home’s current electrical supply can handle.
